SUMMARY:Care Partner Fair (in person or online)
DESCRIPTION:The Innisfail Care Partner Fair is a venue that supports care partners by providing resources and key note speakers at one event. \n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nCommunity Partners in Action – Innisfail and Wellspring Calgary have heard from care partners how difficult it is to take care of their psychological and emotional needs while providing care for their loved one. They also expressed that they did not know where to access resources to support their care giving journey. This fair will address some of those expressed needs. \nGuest speakers at the fair will be Phil Callaway\, known worldwide for his humorous look at life – especially the hard parts. He’s the best-selling author of 27 books on family\, comedy\, life and golf. \nJohnna Lowther\, Director of Programs and Services with Caregivers Alberta\, which  strives to empower caregivers and promote their well-being by providing resources\, mental health support and education for people caring for family members or friends. \nA video will be screened on the “Invisible Patient” that was first shown by Wellspring Calgary as part of its learning series. In the words of Jim Button\, “The caregiver is the invisible patient. Often they can only stand by your side and wonder where they can have an impact. In many cases\, the caregiver has a more complex and stressful journey than the actual patient.” Watch the video of Jim and his wife\, Tracey\, as she shares from a deep well of experience what it is to be the ‘invisible patient. \nAttend in person or join online.

SUMMARY:Writers' Circle: Journaling for the Caregiver
DESCRIPTION:Fall writers’ circle; participants receive a journal prompt\, write\, then share their thoughts with one another \n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nWriting is a wonderful way for caregivers to reduce stress and increase coping skills. Through writing your own narrative\, you can record and review your personal experiences. In general\, this allows people to look for thinking patterns\, problem-solve and see things from a new perspective. Journaling helps us gain a greater understanding of our experiences and reclaim our “self.” \nAt each workshop\, we will gather\, share a journaling prompt\, take some personal journaling time\, then re-group to share with one another.

SUMMARY:COMPASS for the Caregiver (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Running four Fridays\, 9:30 am to noon\, these interactive workshops provide Alberta’s caregivers with support\, resources and education. \n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nCaregiving can be a stressful\, isolating and overwhelming experience. And\, due to the COVID-19 pandemic\, many caregivers are experiencing added levels of stress and anxiety. \nOur award-winning COMPASS for the Caregiver program helps caregivers balance their own well-being with the challenges of caregiving\, and is facilitated by someone who understands those challenges. \nCOMPASS for the Caregiver is a multi-session\, interactive\, online workshop series. \nSession 1 “Being a Caregiver” | September 9\, 9:30 to 12:00 p.m. \nCaregiving can be stressful\, isolating\, and have a negative impact on your physical and mental health. Understand your role as a caregiver and assess your strengths\, challenges and overall sense of self. \nSession 2 “Managing Your Stress” | September 16\, 9:30 to 12:00 p.m. \nLearn how stress can lead to burnout and what you can do to prevent or recover from burnout. We’ll explore how to shift our mindset and seek balance in caregiving. \nSession 3 “Balancing Relationships” | September 23\, 9:30 to 12:00 p.m. \nImprove your communication skills to identify what you need\, ask for help\, and share the care. The hardest lesson as a caregiver is to regain your identity as a whole person by taking care of yourself first. \nSession 4 “Navigating the System” | September 30\, 9:30 to 12:00 p.m. \nIncrease your confidence in accessing services\, reflect on your caregiving journey\, and plan for the future to avoid the stress associated with uncertainty. \n  \nThe COMPASS for the Caregiver workshop has a $300 value. Thanks to sponsorship from Caregivers Alberta\, this course is being offered for a $55 manual and registration fee. We understand many caregivers live on limited incomes. Upon individual request to Caregivers Alberta\, participants can apply to our COMPASS Scholarship Fund and receive assistance with registration fees\, if needed. Please contact programs@caregivers.smwsites.com to learn more or to apply. \n\nRegister
