DESCRIPTION:About this event:\nJoin Alberta Health Services’ Dr. Charlotte Pooler to hear more about the palliative approach to care\, what palliative care consists of\, and end-of-life care. She will provide an overview of AHS palliative care services and access\, including palliative home care. You’ll find out more about palliative care roles\, support and resources for family caregivers.  \nAbout our speaker: \nDr. Charlotte Pooler is a Clinician Scientist with Palliative End of Life Care and Community Programs\, Continuing Care\, Edmonton Zone\, Alberta Health Services and Faculty of Nursing\, University of Alberta. During the completion of her master’s and PhD work\, she focused her research on symptoms (pain\, breathlessness)\, comfort\, suffering\, ethics and qualitative research. Her previous experience is cardiac and critical care nursing. Her current practice and research focus is integrating a palliative approach for patients and families across a range of settings.  \nTickets are available for free or by donation. And due to the COVID-19 pandemic many caregivers are experiencing added levels of stress and anxiety. \nOur award-winning COMPASS for the Caregiver program helps caregivers balance their own well-being with the challenges of caregiving and is facilitated by someone who understands those challenges.\nThis COMPASS for the Caregiver workshop is a multi-session\, consecutive course being held online. \nBefore registering please ensure that you can virtually attend all 4 weekly sessions listed below. \nFriday\, November 5 (9:00 AM to 11:30 AM) \n\nBeing a Caregiver: Caregiving can be stressful\, isolating\, and have a negative impact on your physical and mental health. Understand your role as a caregiver and assess your strengths\, challenges and overall sense of self.\n\nFriday\, November 12 (9:00 AM to 11:30 AM) \n\nManaging Your Stress: Learn how stress can lead to burnout and what you can do to prevent or recover from burnout. We’ll explore how to shift our mindset and seek balance in caregiving.\n\nFriday\, November 19 (9:00 AM to 11:30 AM) \n\nBalancing Relationships: Improve your communication skills to identify what you need\, ask for help\, and share the care. The hardest lesson as a caregiver is to regain your identity as a whole person by taking care of yourself first.\n\nFriday\, November 26 (9:00 AM to 11:30 AM) \n\nNavigating the System: Increase your confidence in accessing services\, reflect on your caregiving journey\, and plan for the future to avoid the stress associated with uncertainty.\n\nThe COMPASS for the Caregiver workshop has a $300 value. Thanks to sponsorship from Caregivers Alberta this course is being offered for a $55.00 manual and registration fee. We understand many caregivers live on limited incomes. Upon individual request to Caregivers Alberta\, participants can apply to our COMPASS Scholarship Fund and receive assistance with registration fees if needed.
